In the past skilled quarrymen used hand chisels to carve intricate designs in slate and their work exists today on numerous commemorative plaques, monuments and headstones. Nowadays computer aided designs and sand blasting equipment is mostly used for slate engraving, although hand engraving can still be undertaken by skilled craftsmen.
